Traumatic ulcers or stomatitis are common lesions that occur in the oral cavity. It can cause discomfort, pain, and difficulty in eating and speaking. The management of traumatic ulcers requires a comprehensive approach, including identifying the cause, proper diagnosis, and appropriate treatment. In this case report, we present the successful management of a traumatic ulcer in an 18-year-old patient using topical medication and oral health education.
An 18-year-old female patient reported to our clinic with a chief complaint of a painful ulcer on the right-back side of the tongue which was caused by accidental biting 4 days ago. Intra-oral examination revealed a single, irregular-shaped ulcer lesion parallel to tooth 46. The lesion was yellowish-white in color, with erythematous well-defined edges, shallow depth, and a concave base. The patient denied any history of recurrent stomatitis, smoking, drug consumption, or allergy.
Based on the clinical presentation, the patient was diagnosed with a traumatic ulcer, and topical medication was prescribed. Triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% in oral base, chlorhexidine 0.1%, and multivitamins were given to the patient. In addition, the patient was educated that the lesion was not a dangerous disease, and good oral hygiene and nutrition intake would help in wound healing.
One week later, the patient came for a follow-up visit, and no complaints were reported. The intra-oral examination revealed that the lesion had fully healed.
In conclusion, the management of traumatic ulcer requires a comprehensive approach, including identifying the cause, proper diagnosis, and appropriate treatment. In this case report, we presented a successful management of a traumatic ulcer in an 18-year-old patient using topical medication and oral health education. The dentist must recognize and treat such cases appropriately in terms of giving medication and patient education.
